Zeroboard representative Michitaka Tokeiji gives a lecture on decarbonization at Toho Gakuen Elementary School

Delivering a message of decarbonization to children who will lead the future

On Thursday, September 18, 2025, Zeroboard Inc.'s CEO, Michitaka Tokeiji, was invited to Toho Gakuen Elementary School (Kunitachi City, Tokyo) to give a lecture on the theme of decarbonization to two classes of sixth graders. The lecture, which included quizzes, was a fun experience for the students.

The title of the lecture was "A lesson on decarbonization that even adults don't know about." The lecture focused on four themes: 1) What is happening on Earth right now? 2) What are the causes? 3) What is decarbonization? 4) What should we do?

  1. What is happening on Earth right now?
He looked back at recent disasters caused by extreme weather, using actual photographs. He introduced Greta Thunberg, who went on strike at school at the age of 15 to call for action on climate change, and explained that the serious Contents in which adults must take climate change seriously is one in which we must all take action.

  2. What is the cause?
The causes of climate change and the increase in greenhouse gases were introduced, and the participants enjoyed a quiz asking, "How much CO2 was on Earth 4 billion years ago?" They gained a new understanding of the mechanism of photosynthesis, in which carbon dioxide is fixed and oxygen is released in exchange, and learned that CO2 increases when humans perform the "reverse" of photosynthesis, a process that only plants can perform.

  3. What is decarbonization?
The participants considered in what aspects of our lives Energy is used, how we can reduce CO2 emissions, and what kind of society is "sustainable." Each participant considered whether it is really sustainable to cut back on Energy consumption, and presented actual examples of CO2 reduction (CFP-certified products, regulations, etc.) to explain the various methods available.
He then introduced "Zeroboard," a tool that calculates and visualizes CO2 emissions.

  4. What should we do?
Tokeiji said that what he wants children to do is not to make various sacrifices to save energy or to reduce CO2 emissions, but that reducing CO2 emissions is the job of adults.
I shared the following three messages with the children as things I wanted them to work on.

    • Go outside and connect with nature.
By learning what insects are alive and what flowers are blooming, and feeling the warmth of the sun, you can become aware of the "warnings" from nature and pass them on to those around you.
    • To study.
Science and math: Discover new technologies such as EVs
Japanese: If you can learn words that move and inspire people, you will find friends who will move forward together.
English: I can talk to researchers and business people from all over the world, which broadens my horizons
    • Electing leaders who will change society.
It will be six or seven years before everyone has the right to vote.
Politicians each have their own manifestos on child-rearing issues, environmental issues, etc. Think about what kind of Energy policy they will advocate and choose your favorite.

The children actively participated in the quiz and listened attentively. We hope that today's encounter will be the children's "first step in creating their future." Small realizations and experiences will eventually lead to great power to change society. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to come into contact with the generation that will carry the future.

Thank you to everyone at Toho Gakuen for giving us this valuable opportunity.
