Zeroboard Research Institute Director Tomoo Machiba speaks at the Malaysia Pavilion Business Forum at the Osaka-Kansai Expo

Discussing the future of carbon markets based on accurate GHG emission amount accounting

Tomoo Machiba, Director of Zeroboard Research Institute , an in-house think tank of Zeroboard Inc.(Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Michitaka Tokeiji ; hereinafter referred to as "our company"), which supports corporate sustainability management, spoke at the business forum "Green Technology and Climate Change" held at the Malaysia Pavilion at the Osaka-Kansai Expo (2025 World Exposition, Japan, Yumeshima, Konohana-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture) on Friday, September 12, 2025.

The forum will bring together policymakers, industry leaders and innovators from Japan and Malaysia to share knowledge and promote international collaboration on the themes of tackling climate change and innovation in environmental technology.

The program included a variety of content, including keynote speeches by Malaysian government officials, a panel discussion on the future of the carbon market and sustainable business models, a "Pocket Talk" series introducing technological innovation and the circular economy, a screening of environmental documentaries, and an MOU exchange ceremony between Japanese companies and the Malaysian government.

Machiba took the stage at a program themed "The Future of Carbon Markets," chaired by Saiful Adib, CEO of Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC). He participated in a panel discussion with Ahmad Farid, Director of Climate Change at the Malaysian Ministry of Natural Resources, Industry and Sustainability (NRES), and Norihiro Kimura, Director General for Global Environmental Issues at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Global Environmental Policy Office. He spoke about the importance of the MRV (measurement, reporting and verification) process in calculating GHG emissions and removals at the corporate, product and project levels, and expressed his hopes for cooperation between the two countries toward establishing a reliable carbon market.
We also introduced our efforts to support the realization of reliable carbon neutrality through our participation as a participating supplier in the Osaka-Kansai Expo and the calculation of GHG emission amount associated with the event.

This forum, aimed at government officials and business leaders from Malaysia, Japan and other countries participating in the Expo, emphasized the importance of strengthening international collaboration centered on sustainability and contributing to the realization of a low-carbon, sustainable future.
As a company that also provides support for decarbonized management in ASEAN, we will continue to contribute to achieving carbon neutrality in Asia, including Japan.

Profile of Tomoo Machiba

Director of Zeroboard Research Institute / Director of the Global Sustainability Standards Council

After working as a journalist for the Asahi Shimbun, he is now involved in supporting corporate and government sustainability strategies internationally. He worked on guideline revisions at the GRI International Secretariat and led eco-innovation policy research at the OECD Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry. He is responsible for knowledge management of renewable energy technology data from around the world at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and for developing strategies and policies for the green economy and climate change response at the UAE Federal Government. He served as Deputy Director of the United Nations Climate Technology Centre Network (CTCN), supporting technology transfer to developing countries, before returning to Japan in 2021. He served as a partner in charge of decarbonization and ESG at ERM, a foreign consulting firm, and became Director of Zeroboard Research Institute in August 2023. He has served as a director of the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB) since January 2024 and as a member of the GHG Protocol Technical Working Group (TWG) since March 2025. He holds a B.A. in Journalism from the Faculty of Letters at Sophia University and a Master's degree from the School of International Development at the University of Sussex, UK.
