Zeroboard Research Institute Director Tomoo Machiba selected as working group member for discussion on the revision of the GHG Protocol
Zeroboard Inc.(Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Michitaka Tokeiji; hereinafter referred to as "the Company"), which supports corporate sustainability management, is pleased to announce that Tomoo Machiba, Director of Zeroboard Research Institute, has been selected from among over 1,300 applicants as a member of the working group that will discuss revisions to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the international standard for calculating and News greenhouse gas emissions.
As a member of the Technical Working Group (TWG) for the Corporate Standard (basic standards for companies to measure and report their GHG emission amount), which forms the basis of the GHG Protocol, Machiba will be participating in discussions on the first revision in over 20 years since the second edition of the Standard was published in 2004.

The GHG Protocol was jointly launched in 1998 by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), and is a framework that has since developed and managed a variety of standards. Discussions are currently underway to revise the protocol to address requests from companies and investors, consistency with international standards, strengthening Scope 3 measurement, responding to new business models, and evolving digital technologies. By evolving the protocol into a more effective standard, the aim is to support companies in decarbonizing their operations and strengthen global climate change measures.
Having been selected as a working group member, Machiba will provide the knowledge and expertise he has gained from his experience in participating in international standard setting and global policy making to address climate change, and will work hard to revise the GHG Protocol to respond to changes in global standards and accelerate climate change measures.
The TWG, in which Machiba participates, is currently discussing reporting principles, calculation boundaries, inter-annual comparisons, verification and assurance, data collection and calculation methodologies, and consistency with other guidance and standards, with the aim of issuing a revised version in 2027.
"The GHG Protocol is an extremely important document that provides common standards for various disclosure standards, including SSBJ, IFRS-S2, ESRS, GRI, CDPs, and SBTi. Given the rapidly increasing demand for GHG emission amount data, I am honored to be able to cooperate in its long-awaited revision. I also hope to actively seek the opinions of Japanese companies, investors, and other stakeholders so that the rules can be applied to all companies around the world," said Machiba.
