We participated in the international conference "EcoBalance 2024."

Zeroboard Research Institute participated in the international conference "EcoBalance 2024" held in Sendai from Sunday, November 3rd to Thursday, November 7th, 2024.

EcoBalance 2024 is organized by the Institute of Life Cycle Assessment of Japan (ILCAJ) and has been held in Japan every two years since 1994. EcoBalance is known as one of the world's leading conferences, with life cycle thinking as its core concept, and attracting participation from academia, Industry, and government. It serves as a forum for discussion on environmental performance assessment, the disclosure of assessment results, and the development and implementation of the discussed methods.

The theme of this event was "Life Cycle Thinking - Beyond Carbon."At the venue, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire survey on transportation, number of nights spent, etc.The CO2 emissions from hosting the conference were offset with credits.

Zeroboard Presentation Poster Session overview
Title: Comparative analysis of corporate greenhouse gas emission amount by different quantification approaches

Presenters: Zeroboard Research Institute , Iching Chen, Akihisa Fukai, and Mayumi Isobe

Industry face a pressing Issue to reduce carbon emission amount across their activity , addressing emissions from both direct operations and upstream supply chains. Although various analytical frameworks have been developed to quantify product life cycle greenhouse gas (LC-GHG) emission amount, several Issue remain.

  • How do different quantification approaches affect the results of calculations of LC-GHG emission amount and what are the implications for the development of effective decarbonization strategies?

  • How do industry-specific characteristics affect the implementation of companies' decarbonization strategies?

We considered these Issue using case studies.

They conclude that establishing a collaborative framework for supplier engagement is a critical success factor in value chain decarbonization efforts, and that examining sector-specific characteristics can provide important insights that support the development of precise, evidence-based strategies to reduce emission amount.

Zeroboard Research Institute presenter's impressions

  • The discussions in the poster session indicated that there was a high level of interest from Industry in reducing emission amount through collaboration with the supply chain.
  • Efforts are underway to build information-sharing platforms centered around industry associations and to develop common evaluation standards, making it important for the industry as a whole to cooperate.
  • It is also expected that building cross-industry cooperative relationships will lead to more efficient emissions reductions and promote innovation.
  • Through a platform like Zeroboard, it will be possible to accelerate decarbonization across the entire Industry sector.
