What percentage of Scope 3 3 emissions are primary data required by CDPs ?

table of contents

The CDPs response period typically begins in April . In 2023, of the companies that received requests for responses from signatory Financial Institution , purchasing companies, and institutions through CDPs , approximately 23,000 companies worldwide (including approximately 2,000 Japanese companies) disclosed information on climate change, forests, and water security. *1

The number of companies responding to CDPs is increasing, and this time we will explain the proportion of primary data for Scope 3 3.

CDPs's guidelines do not actually specify a specific threshold for the percentage of actual measurements from suppliers, but they do encourage reporting of as much Scope 3 3 emission amount data as possible.

Calculation method for "proportion of supplier actual measurements (primary data)"

The CO2 emission amount per product (Intensity) multiplied by the amount procured by that supplier company is the percentage of total Scope 3 emission amount. In other words, the extent to which supplier data is actually used is an important factor when calculating Scope 3 emission amount.

Percentage = CO2 emission amount per product × procurement amount / total Scope 3 emission amount

What is "Supplier Actual Measurement Values (Primary Data)"?

This refers to LCI data collected by suppliers themselves regarding the CO2 Intensity of products and Service they have acquired from their suppliers.

  • Primary data: Data collected by the calculation business operator under its own responsibility.

  • Secondary data: IDEA and literature data

Currently, calculations are often performed using secondary data, but the reality is that it is difficult to link secondary data to emission amount reductions. This is because, if the Emission intensity is fixed, the only way to reduce emissions is to reduce the amount of material purchased. For this reason, companies are proactively working to collect primary data in order to more effectively reduce emissions and improve their CDPs scores.

What if product-level LCA data is not available?

If product-level LCA data cannot be obtained, "activity level, process-level, product-line-level, and facility-level data will be requested from suppliers, and the data will be obtained and allocated as necessary to the portion related to the company's procurement." Data obtained in this way can also be treated as "actual measurements."

Having trouble collecting primary data?

Collecting primary data is difficult and cooperation from suppliers is essential.
Scope 3 is divided into 15 Category , and GHG emission amount must be investigated throughout the entire process, including procurement, Manufacturing , transportation, consumption, and disposal. In such cases, suppliers may not be able to measure their emissions. In such cases, experts and measurement tools can be helpful.
