Reliability and cost effectiveness are the deciding factors for implementation. The thoughts of a leading bank aiming to decarbonize the region and improve corporate value
Reliability and cost effectiveness are the deciding factors for implementation. The thoughts of a leading bank aiming to decarbonize the region and improve corporate value
Person in charge (department and title at the time of interview)
General Affairs Department, General Affairs Section Manager
Mr. Hisaaki Ichinomiya
Deputy Director of the same department
Mr. Hidekazu Toshima
Regional decarbonization is attracting attention, with the Ministry of the Environment selecting regions that are working to achieve carbon neutrality as "decarbonization pioneering regions" and prioritizing budget allocations to them. We spoke to Yamanashi Chuo Bank, a leading bank in The Yamanashi Chuo Bank, Ltd. Prefecture, a prefecture rich in nature with approximately 80% of its land covered by forests, about how they are working to decarbonize.
The bank's purpose is to "open up a prosperous future starting from Yamanashi," and we spoke with Ichinomiya Hisaaki, head of the General Affairs Section of the General Affairs Department, and Tojima Hidekazu, deputy head of the General Affairs Section, who are leading the charge in decarbonization at the bank. They spoke about the reasons for introducing "zeroboard," its current operational status, and future prospects.
-
Issue/Introduction background
- As a leading company in the region, in order to take the lead in decarbonizing, we must first visualize our own CO2 emission amount.
-
Reasons for choosing Zeroboard
- Trust in "zeroboard," a pioneer in the industry, and cost-effectiveness considering the need to introduce it to multiple location
-
Effects of introduction and future plans
- Expected effects: I realized that the time it took to calculate CO2 emission amount has been reduced to less than half of what it used to be.
I want to preserve the natural environment where stag beetles live for my children.
--You introduced "zeroboard" in November 2022. Please tell us about the background to its introduction.
Ichinomiya: In order to advance decarbonization, we thought it was first necessary to visualize CO₂ emission amount . So we first introduced " zeroboard " to visualize the CO₂ emission amount of The Yamanashi Chuo Bank, Ltd. and verified its performance, and then, as the next step, we wanted to provide consulting to local customers. We began considering its introduction, with the belief that this would speed up decarbonization in the region.
--What first prompted you to start working on environmental issues?
Ichinomiya: When I went to catch rhinoceros beetles with my children, I noticed that we could no longer catch any stag beetles, which live in areas with relatively low temperatures. Ever since I was little, I have gone to catch rhinoceros beetles, played in the mountains and rivers, and taken for granted the richness of Yamanashi Prefecture's nature. However, I felt that the environment was gradually changing, with the number of bald mountains increasing. I want to preserve the natural environment that has existed since ancient times for my children's generation.
That being said, Yamanashi Prefecture still has a lot of nature and is an area that experiences relatively few disasters such as floods. For this reason, I think it is sometimes difficult for people to feel a sense of crisis about environmental issues. Therefore, in order to protect the rich nature of Yamanashi Prefecture, I think it is necessary for The Yamanashi Chuo Bank, Ltd. Bank to take the lead in the region and proactively announce the issue.
The deciding factors were the level of reliability the bank required and the cost-effectiveness of implementing it at 92 location
--What made you choose "zeroboard"?
Ichinomiya: It's overwhelmingly reliable and cost-effective. If we were to focus solely on visualizing emission amount, other tools might be sufficient. However, "zeroboard" has received third-party certification based on ISO, and we feel that it has the knowledge of a pioneer.
Banks have a variety of stakeholders. We exist thanks to the trust of the local community, so we cannot afford to give out incorrect figures. That's why we introduced the reliable system "zeroboard." Also, since we want to provide decarbonization consulting to local customers, the fact that Zeroboard specializes in providing tools suited our purpose. The cost-effectiveness was also attractive. We needed to introduce it to 92 location, so even just the basic fee would have been expensive if we had accumulated it. We are grateful for your flexible response in this regard.
How easy is it to use as a tool?
Ichinomiya: Before the introduction, the person in charge had to input data into Excel and do calculations. With Excel, there was a concern that files could be corrupted due to inputting the wrong numbers or human error, so it required great care and required a lot of manpower for the checking work. However, because "zeroboard" is cloud-based, we feel safe knowing that we can avoid such risks.
The CO2 emission amount shown in a pie chart are very easy to see, and I immediately liked it. I also found it easy to use because the CO2 emission amount for each location are visualized in a bar graph, so you can instantly see where you need to start taking measures. Of course, there were things I didn't understand at first, but support was available and the Action were not difficult, so I quickly learned the basics as I went along.
Report Create time reduced by half
-What changes have occurred since the introduction of "zeroboard"?
Ichinomiya: We expect that the process of Create the regular reports that we submit to various government agencies every summer will change significantly. We have only been able to input data for two years so far, but we believe that we can make it more efficient.
Toshima: Because we have so many location, it took time to input the Energy used by type. However, with the support of the Zeroboard staff, things went smoothly once we were able to transfer data from Excel in bulk. We received support almost every day, especially at the beginning of the implementation, and the detailed instructions we received were very helpful.
It only takes time the first time, but once you get used to Action it, it's not a problem. When we were managing data with Excel, we had to figure out where to get the Emission factor, for example, which took a lot of time, but with the introduction of "zeroboard," the standards have been unified, so we hope that the work efficiency of Create reports will improve.
Specifically, how much time do you think you can save?
Toshima: When we calculated the time it takes to get internal approval to introduce "zeroboard," we felt that we could cut the time it takes to Create the annual periodic reports that are submitted to various government agencies by more than half. This will reduce the number of verification tasks required for location, which should lead to a significant increase in work efficiency.
Until now, we had to input items such as electricity, gas, and heavy oil every month and verify whether the figures entered by someone else were correct. Then, we had to add up the figures for the year and verify them again. Now, by installing "zeroboard," we can use the Emission factor in the cloud as they are, so long as the monthly input is accurate, we can eliminate the verification process.
The goal is to decarbonize the region by involving private companies and local governments
--Please tell us about your future prospects for environmental measures.
Ichinomiya: Our current goal is to reduce CO₂ emission amount by 60% compared to fiscal 2013 by 2030. To achieve this, we will consider various measures to reduce CO₂ emission amount. It may be presumptuous, but we hope that our efforts will serve as inspiration for the local community.
I think that introducing the use of "zeroboard" will be the start of decarbonization in the region. I would like to continue to borrow the knowledge and strength of everyone at Zeroboard in order to get not only local private companies but also local governments involved.
Tojima: Our bank's management philosophy is "close ties to the community and sound management." As a member of staff, I would like to first promote our bank's decarbonization efforts while keeping in mind what would benefit the local community. I believe that this will lead to the spread of decarbonization measures among our customers in Yamanashi Prefecture, so I would like to work hard on this.
We have also endorsed the TCFD(Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures), which requires us to disclose a lot of information. We will also need to consider Scope 3 emission amount going forward.
Ichinomiya: "Until now, calculating CO₂ emission amount was only done to submit periodic reports. However, in the coming era, it will help improve corporate value. That's why we want to use ' zeroboard'." These are the words I conveyed at the meeting to introduce ' zeroboard'. We will quickly achieve net-zero emission amount and give back the knowledge gained to the local community. We are proceeding with the belief that this will lead to increased corporate value.
