Standards for ESG information disclosure are being established around the world, and ESG ratings are becoming widely accepted. Among these, one NGO called "CDPs" is attracting particular attention. CDPs evaluates and discloses information about corporate strategies and initiatives aimed at climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emission amount, scoring companies based on their environmental impact. Institutional investors are also paying attention, and its influence cannot be ignored.
In Japan, the number of companies required to disclose information to CDPs will increase from 2022, and all companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Prime Market (1,841 companies) will now be subject to the requirement. Furthermore, an increasing number of companies are requesting information disclosure from their suppliers through CDPs , and companies are being asked to proactively disclose ESG information. However, with a lack of know-how on how to respond, sustainability managers at companies are increasingly finding themselves struggling to respond.
This time, we visited Prima Meat Packers, Ltd. , which Zeroboard supported in responding to CDPs , and asked them about the background and Issue that led them to disclose information through CDPs for the first time, as well as their thoughts on the support provided by Zeroboard.

No response to CDPs information disclosure. Looking for an answer support partner

-- Could you please tell us about the background and circumstances that led you to respond to CDPs?

Matsumoto: This is my third year in charge of the environment. Until then, I had worked in product planning and marketing, so I was focused on reducing plastic and using biomass materials, but I wasn't particularly familiar with the field of CO2 reduction. As I started from scratch as head of the Environmental Management Department, I began by understanding the situation, even though I noticed that there were a lot of foreign words in terms like SBTi and CDPs. I then learned that our CDPs score had been given an "F," and after investigating, I found that Prima Meat Packers, Ltd. had not responded, so I began preparing to respond to CDPs. I started by checking which department had been requested to respond.

 

Tajima: CDPs has a large number of questions and uses a lot of technical terminology, so we thought it would be difficult to answer them on our own, and so we decided to look for a partner to help us.

-What made you decide to contact Zeroboard?

Matsumoto: I knew about Zeroboard because I had read an article about President Tokeiji in the Nikkei newspaper. I remember thinking it was great that it would make it easy to calculate CO2 emission amount, information disclosure of which will be required in the future.

I talked to other companies about CDPs response support and made comparisons, but since this was my first experience, I don't know how well they will meet my expectations. We don't know if we can create an answer using only the data we have. We started by thinking that it would be a good idea to do what we can on our own and get support for the parts we don't understand. Zeroboard was the perfect fit for our situation and needs.

--What do you think is good about Zeroboard's support?

Matsumoto: I like the fact that I can ask Zeroboard anything I don't understand. There were times when I didn't fully understand the intent behind the CDPs questions, but I was able to ask immediately, so I didn't have to worry about how to respond. There were also times when we were asked to reorganize internal data or provide more detailed figures than the data we already had. Our policy was to create answers ourselves as much as possible, so I was grateful for the environment where I could ask questions as needed.

Persons with practical experience in CDPs responses will work hand-in-hand to support you.

--Zero Zeroboard staff would sometimes visit your company and sit down to work together to Create answers.

Matsumoto: Over the course of three months, we Create the answer while exchanging a huge amount of information via chat. They also came to Company several times, connecting their computers to monitors in a conference room and working together on the answer. They provided detailed support right up to the final stages, which allowed us to submit the answer within the limited time frame. Meeting face-to-face and discussing the matter allowed for smooth communication.

Tajima: For example, when Export data from the CDPs system, things didn't go as planned. Since this was the first time we'd encountered such a problem, we didn't know if it was our problem or not. However, we were able to get advice from people with practical experience, who would say things like, "This happens to every company," and "Here's how we can solve it," which gave us peace of mind. We were grateful for that kind of detailed response, one by one.

Matsumoto: The person in charge of Zeroboard had experience creating CDPs responses in his previous job, so it was reassuring to know that he even understood the practical aspects. That was another reason why I chose Zeroboard. I was grateful that they always accompanied me, instead of forcing me to follow commonplace Contents.

--What are your plans for ESG information disclosure next year?

Matsumoto: This was my first time filling out a response to CDPs, and it helped me see where Prima Meat Packers, Ltd.'s environmental efforts are lacking. Furthermore, the questions from CDPs helped me see what the rating agencies are looking for, so I'm considering changing the way I compile data.

Okamoto: This time, I tried to answer honestly and without overreaching. Next year, Issue will be to increase our ESG-related initiatives while looking at the results and improve our evaluation. I think the test will be how much of what we have learned can be passed on. Zeroboard's support allowed us to express ourselves in our own words, which gave us the ability to formulate answers on our own.

Mr. Yamaashi: I would like to improve step by step in areas where Prima Meat Packers, Ltd. is below average, so that we can approach the global standard. I would also like to take advantage of the knowledge I gained from Zeroboard to improve my CDPs response Create .

--In November 2023, we started working with Zeroboard to support the Create of manuals.

Okamoto: We asked Zeroboard to assist us in Create manuals to be used at each of Prima Meat Packers, Ltd.' location , and they are working with us. With Scope 3 calculations in sight, we needed to create a system that would enable accurate calculations as an organization, so we asked for their support. We are currently working on Create a manual that verbalizes what needs to be communicated to the entire company before introducing the tool, and will ensure that the system is easy to use no matter who is in charge.

Matsumoto: We asked for manual Create support after comparing it with other companies, but one of the deciding factors was that they worked hard to help us.

Okamoto: It's also important that counterparts get along well with each other (laughs). We worked together to Create responses to the CDPs , and I could imagine us creating a manual together.

Matsumoto: I feel that their willingness to get down to earth is a good fit for us. I also like the fact that we can talk candidly. To what extent can Prima Meat Packers, Ltd. realistically solve our problems? What is it that Prima Meat Packers, Ltd. is lacking? I think that unless we clarify what they can and cannot do and have a relationship where we can talk candidly, it will be difficult to move forward.
